We have a thread for donations and another for project discussions. This is to track actual disbursements made from your generous donations.

One urgent issue that came out of the meeting held with the representatives of the school and the town on March 21, 2009 is that, there are two classrooms, an office and a library that are not roofed. With the rains coming in, the kids will have no place to sit and study.

We are proposing an immediate advance of $500.00 to help with the roofing. That is the estimate of our contribution to workmanship to get the job done. Apparently, she has already secured some supplies for that purpose.

The plus side of this immediate advance is that, it will show the headmistress that we mean business as much as she does (not just talk and meetings). Then we task her to come up with an estimate of the resources she can come up with for the other parts of the project - the district assembly (the people) included, then we can incorporate that into our plan.

Please let us know if anyone objects to our urgent advance of $500 to be made on Monday.

Update on Wednesday March 25, 2009:

Princess Yola will be going to the school tomorrow with US$500 (GHC 650). Additionally, she has bought vouchers for documenting all transactions. One will be kept by us and the other by the school.

In addition to the Vouchers, receipts will be kept for all transactions.

Out of the US$500 (GHC 650), GHC400 is to be given to the Headmistress for payment of labour of roofing 2 classrooms, Office and the store. The school/community has purchased the lumber needed for the roofing and
the District Assembly has provided the roofing sheets. Some of the remaining amount will be used for other items/supplies such as roofing nails, incidentals, etc.

Sure. Princess Yola will take care of that.

I know we already have pictures of the "before." Slique, Paddy and Co have documented that in different ways that I was beginning to think the headmistress was suspecting that the project was more for our photography forum. :D

One more will not hurt. Please post it here.

Great. A photo-diary of the project would be valuable to keep.

Nice work all! Yes, Princess Yola go! Put some money in the game, and let the people fly. In the meantime, does anyone know a good beach I should sleep on, cos booking a hotel room seems difficult, lol! Also, I am still looking for some suggestions about how to get to Suhum. Sent out a bunch of PM's based on the advice of Confused, but no response across the board yet. No matter, cos I am gonna get there one way or another. The only question is whether anyone in Ghana is gonna help me, or am I gonna have to do this completely alone?

Getting a good hotel near the beaches also depend on your budget, Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Beach are the high-end ones, but you can try Dutch Hotel Nshunaa, AB's Royal Resort, Coco Beach Resort and Riviera Beach Hotel. There are also a number of good hotels that are not necessarily near the beach but getting to the beach in Accra is only a taxi ride away...

Tell us when you expect to be in Accra and some of us based here will see how we can help make your visit a good one...

If you happen to go on a school day, please find out if there is a kid called Kwame/Kwasi Ntow. Tell him I said hi. I will send a bag of candy, but you are too far from me, not to mention the weight.

Is is Kwame or Kwasi? I will find out. A bag of "abrokyire toffee" . I am sure he would have liked that. Speaking of weight some airlines are a royal pain in the a** nowadays... even with just a pound or two overweight on checked luggage.

I lived in SUHUM during my primary school days... know there like the back of my ashy hands LOL..
From accra you should find the nsawam station. Then from there it would be easy to find a car for suhum. But the last time I was there the road from Nsawam to Suhum was under construction ( rerouted to the town outskirts)... From accra to Koforidua through Akuapem mountains is really top notch right now so it would be better to travel that route. I hope it helps

Project Update from "Princess Yola and the Program Team" (Nice name for a musical group - copyrighted by GCF):

The school block has been roofed. Thanks to you all for your support. (HIPIC to post related pictures).

They have also begun plastering one of the classrooms using proceeds from the sale of stones (you remember that was what caught Paddy's attention).

The school will require 200 bags of cement for the plastering and flooring of the three classrooms
and the office/store. The school has been able to procure 40 bags.

A bag of cement (as of today) at Suhum (also in Accra) is about GHC 10.30.
The 160 bags of cement needed will thus cost about GHC 1,648.

The Program Team has asked the Headmistress to put their request in writing to conform with proper administrative procedures. The
Headmistress should include the total cost, their contribution, contributions from other sources (such as assembly if available) and
the specific request they need from us.

The Program Team is highly impressed with what they have done with our initial contribution of
US$ 500. It will be very fulfilling to support Omenanko to complete this school project.

I need those pictures.
I am planning to send someone over there to take some good pictures for a write-up that I want to do. This will be published here, and eslewhere in my attempt to generate some interest and possibly coverage for the project. If this gets them some support, that will even be better.

I will send you and outline for your review.

thanks.
